Collision Coverage in Florida Auto Insurance Explained

Collision Coverage: For the Bumps You Didn’t Plan
Florida roads can take you from an easy coastal drive to a crowded interchange in minutes. Whether you’re navigating I-4 traffic or backing out of a grocery-store parking space, accidents happen. Collision coverage is the part of an auto policy that can help pay to repair or replace your own vehicle after a covered collision, subject to the policy terms and deductible.
What Collision Usually Covers
Collision generally applies when your vehicle hits another vehicle or object, or overturns. That can include a single-car accident involving a guardrail or pole. It can apply even if you’re responsible for the accident, although the insurer will still review the circumstances and policy.
Collision is different from property-damage liability, which responds to covered damage you cause to someone else’s property. It is also different from comprehensive coverage, which typically handles many non-collision losses such as theft, hail or falling objects.
The Deductible and the Car’s Value
You’ll usually choose a collision deductible. If a covered repair costs $3,000 and your deductible is $500, the insurer’s payment may be $2,500, subject to coverage terms. For a total loss, payment generally reflects the vehicle’s covered valuation under the policy, less the deductible and subject to applicable limits and conditions. Collision does not automatically pay off an outstanding loan balance.
Florida law does not generally require drivers to purchase collision coverage, but a finance company or lessor commonly requires it under the contract. If you own an older car outright, weigh the premium and deductible against the car’s value and what it would cost you to replace it.
Compare Coverage Before the Next Drive
Ask about deductible options, rental reimbursement and how collision fits with comprehensive coverage. Rental coverage, when offered, is usually a separate optional coverage rather than something collision automatically provides.
