Underinsured Motorist (UIM) Coverage Explained in Florida Auto Insurance

Underinsured Motorist Coverage: When the Other Driver’s Limits Fall Short

Picture a crash on a busy Florida highway. The other driver is at fault and has bodily injury liability insurance—but not enough to address the injuries and losses involved. Underinsured motorist coverage, often grouped with uninsured motorist coverage as UM/UIM, is designed for certain situations like this.

It’s an optional coverage worth understanding because the liability limits another driver carries are outside your control.

What UIM May Help Cover

Subject to the policy and Florida law, UM/UIM can provide compensation for covered bodily injury losses that a legally responsible uninsured or underinsured driver cannot adequately cover. Depending on the facts, those losses may include medical expenses, lost income and legally recoverable non-economic damages. Coverage does not automatically pay every bill or the difference between any two dollar amounts.

Florida PIP is separate. It can provide certain no-fault benefits after a crash, but it has limits and eligibility rules. UM/UIM may be important when injuries are serious and the at-fault driver’s bodily injury liability coverage is inadequate.

Stacked and Non-Stacked Options

Florida insurers may offer stacked or non-stacked UM coverage, subject to policy forms and statutory rules. Stacking can affect the limits available in some multi-vehicle or multi-policy situations. Non-stacked coverage may cost less but can have different restrictions. Ask for a side-by-side explanation using your own vehicles and household rather than assuming one term always means the same payment.

Check the People and Situations Covered

Who qualifies as an insured, whether the injury occurred in your car, another vehicle or as a pedestrian, and any exclusions can all matter. Hit-and-run claims and accidents involving household vehicles can raise additional policy questions. Read the actual UM/UIM provisions and report a potential claim promptly.

Don’t Compare Premiums Without Comparing Protection

In Florida, UM coverage is generally offered with bodily injury liability policies and may be rejected or selected at lower limits through the legally required process. A rejection or selection decision deserves attention; it should not be treated as an invisible checkbox.
