Citizens Wind-Only Eligibility Guide

Check If Your Home Qualifies for a Citizens Wind-Only Policy

Citizens Property Insurance Corporation offers wind-only coverage for eligible properties in designated areas of Florida. Being located in a wind-only territory is an important first step, but it does not automatically qualify a property for a Citizens policy. Final eligibility depends on the property, applicable Citizens underwriting and eligibility rules, and the availability of qualifying private-market coverage. This guide explains how to check your location using Citizens’ official tool.

1. Use the Citizens Wind-Only Eligibility Tool

Citizens provides an online lookup to help determine whether an address is within a designated wind-only eligibility area.

🌀 Open Citizens Wind-Only Eligibility Tool

Enter the property’s address and review the location result. The lookup can help you determine:

  • Whether the address appears to fall within a designated wind-only territory
  • Whether a more detailed eligibility review may be appropriate
  • Whether you should contact an agent or Citizens to verify the location information

Important: The location lookup is not a quote, a binding decision, or a determination that private-market coverage is unavailable. A Citizens application still must satisfy the applicable underwriting and eligibility requirements, including rules concerning available private insurance offers.

2. What a Citizens Wind-Only Policy Covers

A Citizens wind-only policy is designed to insure covered direct physical loss caused by windstorm or hail, including hurricane wind, subject to the policy’s terms, exclusions, limits, and deductibles. It is not a complete homeowners insurance policy.

Wind-only coverage generally does not provide the separate protection homeowners may need for:

  • Fire and other non-wind property perils
  • Theft
  • Water losses that are not covered windstorm damage, including flooding
  • Personal liability

Homeowners typically need a separate policy for non-wind property coverage and, where appropriate, liability protection. The suitable companion policy depends on the home’s occupancy, construction, condition, and the insurer’s available forms; a DP-1 or HO-8 is not automatically the correct choice. Flood insurance is separate and may also be needed or required.

3. When Homeowners Typically Use Wind-Only Coverage

Wind-only coverage may be considered when:

  • The property is within an eligible wind-only territory
  • Non-wind property coverage is available separately, but an insurer excludes windstorm coverage
  • Available private-market wind coverage is limited or does not meet the homeowner’s needs
  • The property otherwise satisfies Citizens’ eligibility and underwriting requirements

Coastal location, an older home, roof condition, or the price of a full homeowners policy does not, by itself, establish Citizens wind-only eligibility. Comparing the combined cost and coverage of separate wind and non-wind policies against available package-policy alternatives is important; wind-only coverage is not necessarily the least expensive option.

4. Need Help Understanding Your Eligibility?

If you’re unsure whether your home is in an eligible territory, or you want to compare Citizens wind-only coverage with available private-market options, I can review the address, the property’s underwriting details, and the coverage alternatives. A location lookup is a starting point, not a guarantee of acceptance.
